Our Aberystwyth practice opens its doors

Following work in London and the Middle East, Clive Williams returns to Wales and opens his first practice in Baker Street, Aberystwyth.

Our Machynlleth practice opens

Clive opens the practice on Heol Pentrerhedyn in Machynlleth.

Vision Aid Overseas

Clive leads a charity eye care trip to Tanzania, in what would be a precursor to the charity Vision Aid Overseas.

Our Aberaeron practice opens

Clive opens the practice in Ianthe House, Aberaeron, and shortly after is joined by optometrist Gwyneth Thomas who remained with the group for over 25 years.

Pioneering eye care schemes

Clive Williams Opticians become some of the first practices in Wales to provide services under the Low Vision Service Wales and Primary Eyecare Acute Referral schemes.

Cutting edge technology

The Aberystwyth practice becomes the first in Ceredigion to offer OCT 3D retinal scanning, and remained the only practice in the area for almost a decade to offer this advanced clinical testing.

Clive is joined by his son Gruff who began working for the practices as a dispensing assistant.

Eye scan

Technological progress

The Aberystwyth practice upgrades its OCT scanner to the cutting edge Swept Source OCT technology, meaning quicker and more in-depth scanning.

Group

New name, same excellent local eye care

Clive is joined as director by husband and wife optometrists Ceri and Lisa Probert after they moved from working in South East Wales and the practices are renamed Probert & Williams Eye Care.

Visibility

Independent prescribing

Ceri and Lisa become the first optometrists in Ceredigion, and two of the first in Wales to be qualified independent prescribers, meaning they can manage most conditions they encounter rather than referring patients to see an ophthalmologist or their GP.

Award

Award winning eye care and Covid-19 services

Probert & Williams Eye Care wins the ‘Enhanced Optical Services’ Award at the national Optician Awards 2021 after reaching the final in 2020. Ceri Probert was a finalist for 2021 'UK Optometrist of the Year' at the same awards.

The Aberystwyth practice is named an Acute Eye Care Hub by Hywel Dda Health Board, providing emergency eye care during the Covid-19 pandemic, while the local eye clinic was shut.

Greener working

The practices are awarded the Silver NHS Wales Greener Primary Care award, Aber First's Green Award and nominated for Welsh Green Practice of the Year at the 2023 Optometry Wales awards, for significant changes in the way we work, working in a more environmentally and ethically conscious way.
